DescriptionIn this BOF, we will discuss multiple networking best practices with the goal of maximizing the scientific impact of expensive HPC systems. This discussion will begin based upon research, available software, and our own experience. These best practices have provided insight into the Blue Waters system at NCSA at the University of Illinois and provide a resilient design, ease of management, and insightful reporting. We will discuss the collection of network telemetry for the high-resolution monitoring of network health, the analysis of network usage, and the troubleshooting of network problems. This allows reporting, engineering, and operational decisions based on observed measurements and experiences. Additional topics include customer driven WAN designs and peering selections. Further, network resource planning based on peak utilization will be discussed. By designing the network such that its likelihood to be the bottleneck is minimized, the expensive HPC resources can be utilized to their maximum potential to result in the greatest scientific impact. After starting the conversation, an open discussion will be encouraged during this BOF for the participants to comment on these best practices and report on their experiences at their own institutions, highlighting any other practices that should be discussed in this informal exchange forum.
