DescriptionLive training events and webinars are well-received and effective, but it is not always possible for a person to attend on the scheduled date and time. Training organizations are frequently asked to post recordings of these webinars and live events. Unfortunately, a presentation that was well-received as a live event is often not well-received when the recording is posted as-is.

Working with event recordings to create effective asynchronous online materials can be difficult and time-consuming. Editing can be problematic if the event was not recorded with reuse in mind. Value can be added through appropriate edits, indexing, captioning, labs, search, guidance, and references. Assessments in the form of quizzes and badges can be added. However, there are a number of constraints on generating these materials. The solution must be low-cost, and must be shared shortly after the event, while the presentation is still relevant. We have developed a method to record and format for reuse that fits these criteria. Over the next six months, we will evaluate effectiveness, usage, and value.

In this presentation, we will begin by describing how the original live presentations were staged and recorded with an eye toward later reuse, followed by a description of the post-processing to prepare the recording for asynchronous use, with an emphasis on techniques to get individual videos finished and ready quickly and inexpensively. We will then discuss the feedback and usage data collected to date, as well as the potential application of analytics to understand usage and improve training materials.
