Developing a Collaborative Hydrological Modeling Platform

DescriptionSoil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) is a continuous time, semi-distributed, process-based basin model that simulates hydrology and various water quality constituents. It is used worldwide for quantifying the impact of land management practices in large, complex watersheds. SWAT is a comprehensive model that has a steep learning curve. It requires a variety of information in order to run, making it a time-consuming task to prepare the input data for large watersheds. Furthermore, the model’s demand for computing and storage resources presents another challenge for researchers who traditionally run the model locally on their Windows desktops. To address these challenges and make it easy for researchers to collaborate and reuse models, we have developed an online platform for SWAT model education, research, and decision making. It consists of a series of web based applications and is available through a HUBzero based platform called WaterHub (https://mygeohub.org/groups/water-hub).

The key components of the platform include: (1) an online collaboration environment called SWATShare (https://mygeohub.org/groups/water-hub/swatshare_landing) for SWAT model sharing, editing, execution, and visualization; (2) a general purpose Jupyter Notebook tool called HydroGlobe (https://mygeohub.org/tools/hydroglobetool) that delivers ready-to-use hydrologic model input data from several earth observation data sources; and (3) SWATFlow (https://mygeohub.org/groups/water-hub/swatflow) and Flow Extent Viewer (https://mygeohub.org/tools/swatviewer) tools that provide high resolution river flow information for enhanced water resources management, education, and research using the output from SWAT models. The SWAT modeling platform interoperates with several cyberinfrastructure (CI) systems that have synergistic capabilities, including the GABBs [1] building blocks for geospatial data management and analysis and the HydroShare [2] science gateway for hydrological data and model sharing, enabling users to seamlessly access a wider range of functionalities, increasing productivities of research and education.

In this session, we will showcase the main features of these hydrologic modeling tools, their interoperation with other CI systems, and how they work together to facilitate collaborative SWAT workflows across system boundaries.
