DescriptionFor those classically trained in the life sciences, myself included, leveraging computational tools for research can present a large learning curve. When starting out, it can be difficult to even know which questions to ask to improve skills or gain knowledge. However, over the course of a year-long independent research project that emphasized understanding high-performance computing architecture and the construction of molecular dynamics systems, trial-and-error and learning domain-specific knowledge provided unexpectedly generalizable skills for high-performance computing in general. This poster will detail a perspective gained after completion of the project with lessons learned, and show a possible process by which scientists outside the high-performance computing community may gain understanding, providing a framework for others to build upon in learning the use of computational tools.
