DescriptionThis tutorial is a quick immersion in the basics of the Python programming language, including all the tools needed to participate in the Student Modeling Challenge, part of the PEARC18 student program. Topics covered will be variables, types, operators, input/output, control flow, functions, classes, lists, libraries, plotting, data files, and Jupyter notebooks. The tutorial is intended for Python beginners, so hands-on experience will be emphasized at the command line and in Jupyter notebooks. Most techniques will be presented in live-demo mode, and each section will feature an exercise so participants can try out the commands or methods for themselves. To participate fully in the exercises, attendees should come with the latest version of the Anaconda Python 3 package downloaded and installed on their computer. You can get Anaconda Python at https://www.anaconda.com/download.
