Birds of a Feather:
Cyberinfrastructure Challenges and Opportunities in the Era of Big Data
Birds of a Feather
TimeWednesday, July 255pm - 6pm
DescriptionIn the last few years, both the technology landscape and the requirements of the user community as they relate to the storage and processing of data have become more diverse, more substantial and more promising. The promise of flash and NVMe devices, the oft-prophesied demise of tape media, and the uncertain future of traditional platter drive technologies, along with the increasing availability of commoditized “cloud” storage options from commercial providers, present a bewildering array of options to cyberinfrastructure providers. Meanwhile, the availability of new datasets from networked devices, next-generation sequencers, and various forms of wearable monitoring technology, just to name a few, have created new and more complex needs from a larger user community than ever before. We propose to introduce and provide a forum for discussion of the challenges faced by cyberinfrastructure providers, and users, in the realm of provisioning, managing, and supporting infrastructure for data-centric research and publication activities. The goal of the discussion will be to share user needs across facilities, understand how various institutions are approaching technological and user interaction challenges, and to foster better overall understanding of the breadth of needs and solutions for high end data-centric computing.
