DescriptionTaking Your Work to the Public
In this panel, science communication professionals will discuss how HPC scientists and engineers can best help the public understand the significance of their work. Topics will include the difference between scientific/technical importance and newsworthiness, common difficulties lay audiences have when encountering technical stories, and the sometimes perverse ways in which different methods of framing scientific news can garble the message in laypeople’s ears — or even convey the opposite message that the researcher intended. The panel will begin with the moderator pooling each panelist about their take on these topics, and end with an open question and answer session for attendees.
Panelists will include science journalists, university public information officers, and other experts in science communication.
